Effective Resumes and Cover Letters
Developing an effective resume and cover letter is extremely important; arguably even more important than finding job posting themselves, as these can be a great tool to use for cold calls and applying as a substitute, even when there is no position posted.
Resumes give you a chance to highlight your experiences, education, and personal traits that relate to a particular position. For a resume relating to teaching EAL, consider the traits that you value most for a teacher, and highlight those that you embody in your resume.
In your cover letter, explain how your experiences, education, and personal traits fit well with the position to which you are applying. Make sure to research the organization and the job beforehand to personalize your cover letter (and resume), and show the employer that you are knowledgeable about the position, and took initiative to conduct research before applying.
If you don't have a lot of teaching (or related) experience to showcase in your resume and cover letter, consider adding a section to address professional development or volunteering if you have more experience relating to teaching EAL in these areas. If you realize that you don't have a lot of professional development experience, or volunteer experience, then get out there; these areas won't improve themselves. Check out the "Professional Development" & "Volunteering" sections of this website for more ideas on these opportunities.
